A CELEBRATION of the life of Linda Norgrove will take place on Saturday, October 8 as the community of Uig will come together – and invite islanders and others further afield – to take part in the inaugural Linda Norgrove Valtos Peninsula 10k, writes Eilidh Whiteford.
Race organisers Tony and Kirsty Wade expand: “We were very keen to have an event in Uig, where Linda spent much of her early life and her family are very much part of the community.
“The Valtos Peninsula is very beautiful and will form the perfect backdrop for the event. It will be possible to run, walk and run, or just walk the course depending on your fitness levels.
“Although it is one of the most scenic parts of Lewis, I have to admit there are one or two ‘ups and downs’ on the route!” adds Tony.
Starting at Reef Machair at 12pm on October 8, the date has been selected for the event as it marks the anniversary of Linda’s tragic death in a failed rescue attempt following her kidnap in Afghanistan.
If you are unable to make the race however, perhaps because you live off island, but still wish to show your support, no problem, as Kirsty explains: “We recognise that not everyone who would like to take part will be able to make it back to Lewis on the day.
“We would like to emphasise the worldwide impact that Linda made during her life by offering a ‘Long Distance Entry’. This will allow anyone, wherever they are in the world, to show their support for the fantastic work the Linda Norgrove Foundation is doing for women and children in Afghanistan.
“And don’t worry, ‘Long Distance Entry; relates to your geographical location, not having to run or walk further!” she chuckles, continuing: “You will be able to register for the 10k by email from anywhere in the world and we will post a race t-shirt to each entrant.
“The idea is that people can run or walk 6.2miles (10k) on the day and send a picture of themselves wearing the t-shirt which will be posted on the Facebook page. In this way, many people who knew Linda or would like to take part in the event will be able to participate.”
On-island entry forms for the Linda Norgrove Valtos Peninsula 10k are available at Lewis Sports Centre and Sportsworld in Stornoway, and entry cost is £10. And completed forms can by handed in at Lewis Sports Centre or posted to Janet Macleod, 16 Uigean, Isle of Lewis, HS2 9HX.
Entry and sponsor forms are also available to download from www.lindanorgrovefoundation.org/run
T-shirts for the run will be available shortly, at a cost of £11. And ‘Long Distance Entry’ comes at a charge of £20, which includes entry, a t-shirt and postage.
