Celtic Media award for Derek Murray

DEREK 'Pluto' Murray from Ness, Lewis, scooped the Radio Personality Award at the 2008 Celtic Media Festival held recently in Galway, Ireland – making it four in a row from Radio nan Gaidheal presenters.

Since the awards inception, radio personalities Niall Iain Macdonald, Kenny MacIver and Mary Ann Kennedy have all walked away with the prestigious accolade.

And this year it was Derek's turn. He was also one of only two BBC Scotland winners at the Festival.

Prior to joining the BBC in February 2003, Derek served in the police force for a number of years. He now contributes to much of BBC Radio nan Gaidheal's 'live' programme output.

His Gaidhlig football commentary on Scotland's Euro 2008 campaign kept the listeners fully engrossed with his inimitable style.

And never one to miss out on an opportunity to test his nerve, Derek has found himself in a variety of differing situations, ranging from racing around Inverness in a rally car at high speed to driving from Ullapool to Glasgow in aid of charity – all the time taking his listeners with him on his adventures.

But it is not all fun and games and Derek's prime journalistic skills, coupled with a warm personality and news gathering experience, have brought BBC Radio nan Gaidheal important far reaching and human interest stories from around Scotland.
