Another consultation has been launched by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) after Certas Energy improved its offer to help increase competition in the local fuel market.

The previous consultation, launched in March this year, got 86 written responses, the majority of which called for the access to the Stornoway fuel depot to be extended.

The new offer would see access to the Stornoway depot extended to five years instead of two and half, with an additional commitment that the cost of operating the terminal will be the same for competitors as it is for Certas.

Local fuel campaigner and owner of Back Filling Station, Gordon ‘Diesel’ Maclennan, welcomed the revised offer.

He said: “I am assured by Certas that access to the depot for competitors will be allowed beyond this period and would indeed be an ongoing process.” He added: “I think that with the help of the CMA we now have a great result in place and that hopefully the bad old days are gone for good.”

The CMA say they are minded to accept the offer, which would see an end to its investigation.
