Chemical spill at Nicolson Institute

FIRE brigades were called to the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway this afternoon following a chemical spill in one of the Science classrooms.

No pupils were present at the time but three fire engines attended as a precaution as the chemical, ethanoic anhydride, is potentially flammable.

The room and nearby corridor have been evacuated and alternative arrangements have been made for any classes scheduled to take place there this afternoon.

The school anticipates the room and corridor will be back in use tomorrow.

An accident report is now being prepared.
