Choir steps up to challenge

This was the colourful sight which confronted drivers travelling to and from the Isle of Harris recently when the pupils from Sir E Scott School gave up their Saturday to do a gruelling walk to raise funds for their Gaelic choir.

The girls, some of whom were in fancy dress, walked from Balallan on Lewis to the Scaladale Centre and others walked from Scaladale over the Clisham, the highest hill in the Western Isles, to Tarbert.

Music teacher Iain Maciver said: “Three of the girls, Moreen Maclennan, Hazel MacLeod and Caitlin Mulhern, did the whole distance along with myself and Margo MacLeod, who is a committee member. They did 22 miles in total with just a 10-minute break at Scaladale.”

He said that between the sponsorship and the generosity of drivers who stopped along the way, the total raised for the choir by the girls’ efforts would be about £1,500.
