Christmas Eve death plunges Isle of Harris into mourning

Jim O’Donnell, 29, better known to many as Jad, was pronounced dead at the scene following the single vehicle crash.

The A859 south of Ardhasaig was closed for several hours by specialist road policing officers investigating the crash. The main road linking the two islands remained closed north of Tarbert for most of Christmas Eve and overnight.

The fish farm worker and footballer for Lochs FC was described on social media as a ‘loveable rogue’.

Writing on the clubs Facebook page, the chairman of Stornoway Sea Angling Club, Angus (Teddy) Mackenzie said: “The Sea Angling Club was devastated to learn the tragic death of friend of the club, Jim O’Donnell,

“Jim was a classic wind-up merchant, a lovable rogue, who often drove me up the wall - but just at the point of being thrown out of the club, he would turn round and ask ‘Angie, give me a cuddle!’ and everything was alright again.

One friend of the deceased posted his sentiments: “So saddened to hear the news. Always a pleasure to be in your company in and outside of work. Never a dull moment when you were around. Rest easy Jad.”

While another friend paid a personal tribute on Facebook, saying:”No words. Best striker I played with RIP lad fly high.”

Police Sergeant Kate Park of the Road Policing Unit in Dingwall said: ““Anyone who was in the area and witnessed the crash is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 0718 of 24 December.”
