There was an excellent turnout for Coisir Eilean na Hearadh’s Christmas Concert, held on Thursday 4th December in the Harris Hotel dining room.
Musical Director Christine Hurley had prepared a wide-ranging Christmas-themed repertoire for the singers which demonstrated their abilities to perform mainly four-part arrangements, gathered from different eras and representing different cultures.
The programme of traditional carols and other seasonal music featured pieces sung in English, Latin, Gaelic, French and German.
The audience enjoyed solos by Kate Langley (Hodie); Fiona Langley (Once In Royal David’s City); and a duet by Alasdair and Fiona Langley (Anns an Dubhlach Geamhraidh).
While some items were intended to be sung without accompaniment, instruments used at various stages of the performance included piano, treble recorder, autoharp, tambourine, acoustic guitar and, for the calypso, some interesting light percussion.
The appreciative audience responded with enthusiasm as the evening progressed, and made a fine sound in their own right when they joined in with popular Christmas songs such as ‘Good King Wenceslas’, ‘The Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy’ and ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’.
After the final song, ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’, singers and audience were able to enjoy mince pies and mulled wine, teas and coffees. This provided an ideal opportunity for all concerned to socialise after the concert.
The sense of community felt throughout the evening was greatly enhanced thanks to the generous donations amounting to over £150 handed in at the door.
The choir will make an announcement early in the New Year in order to confirm the details of these funds and how they will be distributed.
Thanks to all who contributed.
The choir will resume practices on Thursday 8 January 2015 at 7.30pm in Tarbert Community Centre. If interested in attending a practice,
