Councillor Alasdair Macleod, Chair of Sustainable Development at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, has backed calls by Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil, and others, to have the consultation on fresh changes to restrictions on important fishing grounds, extended.
He said: “The Consultation period should be extended by at least six weeks to give fishermen, and other interested parties, the opportunity to respond, particularly with this taking place over the Christmas holiday period.
“The new measures could have serious financial implications on the Western Isles and it is of upmost importance that the those affected have the time to respond to the consultation.
“The Comhairle is still of the view that there should be a ten year moratorium on any new designations in the Western Isles - which is already making a significantly greater contribution than any other part of Scotland.
“I would call on the agencies involved to respect local opinion, reverse these proposals and stand up for the Islands, the local economy and our communities.”
