Crichton welcomes decision to reprieve rural schools

Western Isles Labour candidate Donald Crichton has welcomed the Government’s decision to reprieve four rural schools in the islands.

Mr Crichton said: “I welcome this decision as it will come as a huge relief to the pupils and parents in the communities affected.

Our children deserve to be educated in the best possible school environment and to the highest standards. This does not come cheap but requires the necessary resources.

I hope that Mr Russell will now follow through with what would be the logical conclusion to his rural schools policy and provide the financial resources to the local authority to maintain the excellent educational provision being delivered in those schools. I want more detail on the decision and to meet with the respective Parent Councils and the Comhairle so that I can be fully informed of their positions.”
