Counterfeit bank notes in circulation

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Trading Standards Officers have issued a warning after a number of counterfeit notes have been found circulating in the Western Isles.

A spokesperson said: “Although some counterfeit notes are easy to spot we would certainly advise businesses and shops to ensure that they check notes. This is good practice at any time and is made easier when using an ultra-violet checking device that will detect the ultra-violet security markings built into genuine notes as well as credit and debit cards.”

Gordon Anderson, Acting Chair of Outer Hebrides Chamber of Commerce, said: “We have evidence from a number of businesses that there are a number of counterfeit notes circulating in the Western Isles.”
