Group of youths in Stornoway causing concern as vandalism rises in the area

Police have expressed concerns about the behaviour of a small group of youths in Stornoway following an increase in vandalism in the area.

The figures for reported cases of vandalism, especially in the Stornoway area, rose significantly in the period April-June 2020, to almost double those of the same period in the previous year, with 34 cases reported across the islands.

The issue was highlighted as Chief Inspector Ian Graham, Police Scotland’s Western Isles area commander, gave a report to local councillors on Comhairle nan Eilean Siar on police performance in the period.

During the meeting, senior police officers confirmed their concerns about the behaviour of a small group of youths in the Stornoway area.

Police Scotland is currently working with other local agencies to address the problem. 

In terms of common assault, the area commander’s report confirmed that there was an increase of 17 cases dealt with by police above the numbers reported last year, with 43 instances in the three month period, and 23 of these cases related to assaults on emergency service workers.  

Incidences of drivers reported for speeding have also risen with 23 people detected in the period, a more than three-fold rise on the previous year’s figure.
