POSTAL ballot papers for the forthcoming Crofting Commission elections were issued yesterday (Tuesday, February 28th) to select five new Board members to represent Shetland, East Highlands, Western Isles, West Highlands and South West, and Highland.
A total of 10,877 voters are eligible to take part and there are 28 candidates vying for the five Board positions.
The position of Board member in the Commission’s sixth area, Orkney and Caithness, is not being contested and Arnie Pirie has remained elected unopposed.
There are 4,522 eligible voters in the Western Isles and the six candidates to chose from are: Malcolm MacLeod Macdonald from Bernera; Roderick MacDonald from North Lochboisdale, South Uist; Murdo MacLeannan from Aignis, Stornoway; Neil MacLennan from Castlebay, Barra; Donald Macrury from Borve, Lewis; and Donald Manford from Eoligarry, Barra.
The election will be conducted under the Alternative Vote System and ballot papers must be returned in the envelope provided by 4pm on Thursday, March 15.
The count will then take place at Inverness Town Hall on Friday, March 16.
