Crown Estate comment on ‘Island Prospectus’

The Crown Estate has issued a statement following the Scottish Government’s announcement of an ‘Island Prospectus’.

On Monday First Minister Alex Salmond revealed plans to allocate 100 per cent of the net income from the islands’ sea bed leasing revenues to island communities if Scotland votes to become an independent country.

Crown Estate assets became a key focus of the ‘Our Islands Our Future’ campaign run by the Western Isles, Shetland and Orkney Island councils.

Commenting on the announcement a spokesperson for The Crown Estate said: “Independence and the remit of The Crown Estate are matters for the Scottish people and for government respectively.

“There are various ways in which local authorities can currently control and manage foreshore while benefitting from The Crown Estate’s expertise and, in some instances, capital investment. These include Local Management Agreements, long-term leases and direct ownership.

“We will continue to work with government, the Islands councils, communities and industry to sustainably develop sectors that are critical to Scotland’s coastal and rural areas including aquaculture, tourism and offshore renewables.”

A prospectus of commitments from the UK Government in light of the ‘Our Islands Our Future’ campaign is expected sometime next month.
