“THESE days I don’t diet, instead I eat extremely well and exercise regularly. Sometimes we may over indulge but even that’s ok if you learn how to balance your life,” wise words from island resident Sarah.

Sarah has not only lost two and a half stone in weight over the last eighteen months, but has also found a new self-confident approach to life – all thanks to joining Healthy Weighs.

“My self-confidence was rocked and I just wanted to hide away at every opportunity, especially in social situations,” continues Sarah. “It sounds cliché but its something that is a very real struggle for many of us.

“I was very aware that as a busy working mum I was not only losing my confidence and enjoyment of life but was also putting myself at risk of many more serious illnesses and diseases.

“The realisation of just how much I needed to change things for the long term encouraged me to join Healthy Weighs and the support, guidance and encouragement its provided has been invaluable.” And there is hope for us all as the popular weight management class now returns next week. So, if you feel it’s time to ditch the diet and learn how to live a healthier lifestyle, get on board the health-kick wagon.

Run in Ionad Spors Leodhais, the six week cycle sessions are held by a dietitian Karen France and fitness instructor Janet Macdonald, who look at a different topic every week.

Discussion sessions offer the opportunity for Healthy Weigh-ers to ask questions, get specific advice, receive written information and learn about thinks like healthy eating, food labelling, making healthier choices in you daily life, faddy diets and exercise advice.

The problem with many fad and quick fix diets – as Sarah found out – is that you lose weight quickly, but once you return to your normal habits it all goes back on.

At Healthy Weighs the classes instead seek to encourage sustainable lifestyle changes so that you achieve your goal weight and maintain it long term.

A fellow convert to the sports centre classes, Mairi, has also discovered the benefits of doing things properly.

She says: “I have tried various diets and diet classes over the years but this is the first one that have given me long term results, the healthy eating plan is so easy to follow and if you do follow it correctly you certainly won’t starve – in fact some days I was having to force myself to eat all that I was being asked to!

“The second half of the class focuses on your fitness and exercises to suit your lifestyle which initially I thought ‘ok, I’ll listen but I certainly won’t be running’; however with the encouragement and enthusiasm from Janet we were soon at the gym, attending various classes and I’m now doing some form of exercise, from running to zumba five times a week and completed my first 10km run earlier this year.”

Mairi adds: “Since starting Healthy Weighs in January 2010 I have achieved the main goal of losing weight – I’ve lost three and a half stone – but along with this I have been re-educated in lifestyle changes like healthy eating and fitness as well as enjoying the social aspect of meeting new people, all with the help and support from Karen and Janet.”

Starting back again on Wednesday, September 7, at 5pm, Healthy Weighs is a group for you, to use when you need it.

Although the programme follows a six week cycle, it is also flexible to meet the needs of the people in the group and after six weeks you can continue to attend the full session and take part in discussions again, or choose to attend the weigh in session only.

The weigh-in only sessions are useful for those who feel that they need someone to be monitoring their weight on a regular basis, and don’t panic – your weight will never be given out to the rest of the group: unless you want to share your success with everyone!
