Trading Standards Officers at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are reminding residents in the Western Isles that they can stop cold callers by displaying a ‘No Uninvited Sales People’ sign.
A spokesperson said: ”We would like to encourage anyone who does not wish to be bothered by doorstep sellers or other cold callers to display this signage. Often doorstep callers will use pressure selling tactics to rush people into a purchase for goods or services which consumers may later regret.
“If you have elderly neighbours or family please consider printing off a doorstoppers sign for them.
“The signage can be downloaded and printed from the Comhairle website and should be displayed on a glazed door panel with the main text facing outwards. It is available at /www.cne-siar.gov.uk/doorstoppers.”
The spokesperson added: “The site also has a downloadable card which can be shown to doorstep callers. This means that you don’t actually have to say anything to the caller. You can show them the doorstoppers card and they should get the message.”
If you want to report doorstep sellers or are concerned about elderly relatives or neighbours please use our 24 hour number on 01851 701702 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or in an emergency dial 999 for the Police.
When reporting doorstep sellers, it is helpful if you are able to pass on to Police or Trading Standards, vehicle registration numbers and descriptions of the individuals concerned.
