Barra Youth Cafe in Castlebay recently played host to an Emergency Services Accident and Emergency demonstration.

The purpose of the event was to raise the awareness of the young people of the emergency services, as well as outlining the risks and consequences of getting into a car with a driver who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Watch Manager Willie Douglas picked two eager and willing young volunteers who agreed to be strapped in to the car whilst the Fire and Rescue Services, along with the Ambulance Service and Police, proceeded to re-enact a real life emergency rescue.

This entailed both volunteers being checked over by the paramedics whilst in the car before being cut out of the car and stretchered off to the ambulance.

Watch Manager Willie Douglas spoke with all the young people observing about the risks, dangers and consequences of drink driving.

The demonstration was watched by 36 young people who all gave the emergency services a big round of applause once it was over.

After the display, Willie Douglas and Neil Davidson (paramedic officer) joined the young people in the Youth Café and had a discussion with them about the emergency services.

In an evaluation, 36 young people stated they had an increase in awareness about the work of the emergency services and all young people stated that their awareness had been raised about the effects of driving whilst under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Thirty-two stated that they would not get into a car if offered a lift home if they thought the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

When asked two things that the young person would or would not do as a result of this exercise - 75% said that they would not drink and drive and 50% said they would not get in a car with someone, or someone they thought was, under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

This was a very real life exercise with the purpose being to deter young people from putting themselves into dangerous situations regarding cars.

The Barra Youth Café would like to say a huge thank you to the Fire and Rescue Service, Ambulance Service and the Police who came along and put on a tremendous demonstration for the young people of Barra and Vatersay.
