Environment Minister to visit Western Isles

Environment and Climate Change Minister Paul Wheelhouse will visit the Western Isles this week to undertake a series of meetings.

He will meet with fishermen, crofters, and Stòras Uibhist - the managers of the South Uist estate - in Stornoway, Benbecula and Barra.

Before leaving Mr Wheelhouse said: “While I have enjoyed a previous visit to the area as a tourist, I am really looking forward to my first visit to the Western Isles as a government minister. This is a really valuable opportunity to meet with local people, including fishermen and crofters to discuss a range of issues including, of course, the proposed Special Area of Conversation in Barra, but also crofting policy, the aquaculture sector and how local communities can adapt to climate change.”

He will meet Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and the Western Isles Fishermen’s Association tomorrow night (Tuesday); Storas Uibhist on Wednesday morning followed by the Lochboisdale Amenity Trust and then Crofters on Barra in the evening. On Thursday he will meet community representatives to discuss the future of the Sound of Barra, he will also meet with Barratlantic and Marine Harvest.
