Britain’s leading travel writers and editors have had their say on the top non-city holiday destination – and the result is the Hebrides!
Travel website ‘101 Holidays’ (www.101holidays.co.uk) recently surveyed more than 100 writers and editors, including many of the UK’s most experienced and influential travel journalists from Simon Calder of the Independent to celebrity travel writer Ben Fogle, to discover the places which they love the most.
In the Top 10 of ‘Favourite UK travel destinations’ the No 1 spot is taken by London, with Edinburgh sitting at No 2.
However, firm in the No 3 spot are the Hebrides – and if the cities were removed, the islands would be crowned the favourite UK destination!
Although not in the Top 10, island serving airline Loganair got a mention in the ‘Favourite Airline’ category.
And the Outer Hebrides glorious beaches also feature in the holiday round-up with Luskentyre in Harris voted as No 7 in the Top 10 ‘Favourite Beaches in the UK’ listings.
Commenting on the results, Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil said: “I am delighted to see the Hebrides has been ranked as the No 3 travel desitnation in the UK. “We must note that we were beaten by two cities, London and Edinburgh, and when you exclude the cities from this category, the Hebrides ranked No 1.
“This is a fantastic boost for our tourism industry and will be welcome throughout the Hebrides.”
Islanders have always known the Western Isles are a special place to be, but it seems now the word is getting out so perhaps this summer will be a boom-time for the Hebrides tourism industry!
