First CalMac Culture Screen

Ferry operator, Caledonian MacBrayne is giving the UK’s most promising young filmmakers a chance to showcase their work to a worldwide audience.

CalMac Culture Screen is the latest addition to the growing CalMac Culture family of competitions and is open to 18-30 year-old UK based amateur film makers.

Budding directors are being asked to create a 30 second film about what they are most passionate about to demonstrate their film making skills, this will be accompanied by a written pitch explaining why they think young people would want to spend time in the Western Isles which will form the story line for a short promotional film the winner will help produce.

The winning entry will also get the chance to join production company 29Studios/29Steps on a promotional film shoot on a Hebridean island over the summer to be shown as the focus of a CalMac marketing campaign.

They will get involved in all aspects of the film’s production and will appear prominently in the credits.

CalMac has been serving the the west coast of Scotland for more than 160 years, providing lifeline services to 24 islands and a number of mainland destinations. Last year they carried more than 4.6 million passengers.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for a young film maker to get real hands on experience of a live shoot and get a credited piece of work in their portfolio that will be shown to a world wide audience,” said CalMac’s commercial director, Cathy Craig.

The competition will be judged by CalMac, 29Studios and a leading film industry figure.

Entries should be submitted through the CalMac Culture Screen page by June 10.
