One hundred relatives and friends turned up for the 100th birthday party of Mrs Mary Mackenzie from Laxay in Lewis at the weekend.

Still hale and hearty and with an excellent memory, Mary was born in Balallan in the Lochs area.

She left for Glasgow before the Second World War to work in service. In 1939 she married George Mackenzie in Govan and they then returned home to the island and settled at 7 Laxay where they had a family a daughter and two sons.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1985.

Mary has nine grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Two of her great grand children, Lachlan and Daisy, had the pleasure of presenting her with the birthday card from HM the Queen at the celebrations in the Willow Suite in the Caberfeidh Hotel in Stornoway where the guests were able to watch a constant “This is your life” video presentation showing Mary throughout the years.
