Our spy says
If my religion is sybarite, I wouldn’t mind going to this spa in the afterlife.
But, why wait that long, as their new spa package is great value, considering you can make a whole day of it, and get fed? I arrived at the crack of dawn to take advantage of the facilities. There’s the darkened steam room, with a twinkly ceiling of constellation-like bulbs, the dramatic Jacuzzi pool (pictured), creaking-ly hot sauna, tropical and ice showers, and a relaxation room with glossy magazines, plus ginseng tea and seeds and dried fruit to snack on.
After an hour or so of pottering around, I met my lovely therapist Leah at the appointed time and she led me through to one of their caramel coloured treatment rooms.
The experience kicked off with a foot ritual involving rose-scented water and a gentle scrub, then it was up onto their bed for my choice of treatment – a hot stone massage. I’ve had this classic therapy loads of times before, but this was especially good, as the smooth hot stones were used less as a tool to disperse knots (ouch) and more to bring warmth to the muscles. So, while piano music played on the stereo, Leah rubbed my shoulders, back, sides of spine, quads and calves using her thumbs, palms and a peppermint scented Energising Oil, then she’d smooth the stones over the top.
I turned over onto my back and, once the front of my body had been massaged, there was a gentle arm and hand rub, which moved up to my shoulders and scalp. Joy.
All good things must come to an end, but at least there was food in Deseo at The Spa to console me. As part of the Spring Spa Package, you can go for their two course lunch or their special tasting tray, both of which have been created in conjunction with their inhouse naturopath Louise Westra. I chose the tray, which features healthy mini courses, all of which were utterly gorgeous. There was a confit chicken broth, fennel and orange salad, smoked salmon with avocado, flourless chocolate cake and chia mango pudding, among other delights. Just the right side of virtuous.
After a visit to this most heavenly of spas, I’m revitalised and bouncing like the Easter bunny.
