Heritage status for the Western Isles?

A report commissioned by the Royal National Mod organisers backed the proposal for the Western Isles to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is hoped that by designating the Western Isles as a National Heritage Site the preservation of the Gaelic language and the the profile of the language will be improved, also proving more opportunity to cash in on tourism in the area.

The Western Isles, as the traditional heartland of the Gaelic language and the report stated that unless more is done to preserve the language and culture of the islands the Gaelic way of life could be lost.
