Hurdle cleared by Stornoway wind farm

The Stornoway Wind Farm has now cleared another of its aviation hurdles following the news that Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) have withdrawn any concerns they had about the potential impact on Stornoway Airport following the implementation and testing of new procedures.

The news follows an announcement last month that the national air traffic systems organisation, NATS, were withdrawing its objection to Stornoway Wind Farm, following completion of further study work on possible interference from the wind farm with its Stornoway Radio Station at Sandwick.

In 2013 a contract was let for the design of a new Instrument Flight Procedure that would reduce any potential effects of both the LWP development and a 20/20 Renewables development at Druim Leathann on the Isle of Lewis.

The new flight and safety checks have now been approved by Civil Aviation Authority and the procedure is operational.

Commenting on the announcement, Darren Cuming, project director for Lewis Wind Power said: “The Stornoway Wind Farm development is going from strength to strength.

“This latest announcement from the operators of Stornoway Airport means that we have now completed all our necessary aviation work that was associated with the consent for the wind farm.

“The wind farm will bring huge benefits to the local community through a mix of community benefits, community equity and rental payments. This news brings that another step closer to reality.”
