Island pupils jumping for joy after stellar exam results

More than 3000 pupils scattered around the Western Isles received their exam results this week on a day when it was confirmed that more pupils across Scotland earned a university place than in any previous year.

A whopping 140,000 certificates dropped through letterboxes across Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA).

It has been reported that 28,300 Scottish students had successfully secured their places on their further education courses.

There were 152,701 Higher passes – the second highest number on record and 77 per cent of all those who sat highers.

National 5 passes were at 79 per cent with 234,160 passing while National 4 pass rates were even higher with 93 per cent of all who sat – 114,635.

On home soil students with were thrilled with their results.

Four As – three in Advanced highers – have put Katie Emmott on course for a choice of any career path she decides on.

Katie achieved her top marks in Advanced Higher Maths, Physics and English and also a Higher in Latin and she is set to continue her education at Glasgow University where she will study Maths and Physics.

Katie, 18, of Back said: “I was woken up by the sound of my phone’s text alert going off and seeing my results it was a nice way to wake up.

“I wasn’t nervous at all until Monday but then I did begin to feel nervous.

‘‘I had an unconditional offer for university already but it’s nice to have done so well.”

Other students which excelled were Katie Macinnes from Lochs (English, Gaelic, History, Music and Classical Studies), Catriona Bain from Back (English, Gaidhlig, Art, History and Health and Food Rechnology) and Julie Macleod of Stornoway (Biology, Chemistry, English, Latin and Maths) who received straight A results.

The Comhairle have welcomed the 2016 results which show that, at Higher level, there were 963 presentations and an increase in the percentage of A-C passes to 81.20%.

This represents 782 Higher passes.

Overall, at National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher, data shows a slight decrease in the number of presentations and percentage passes.

Across the authority, there were 3,216 presentations with an 86.94% pass rate.
