Western Isles MSP, Alasdair Allan, took part in an event on Saturday which aims to help bring new investment and activity to the community of Lochs in Lewis.
The Lochs Community development group launched their community plan at a well attended event in North Lochs Community Centre.
Dr Allan commented: “This was a chance to hear about the work which the community in Lochs is doing for themselves to bring much needed investment into the area and to bring together the many talents and ideas that exist in this part of Lewis. I welcome the amount of work which has already been put into mapping a way ahead for Lochs on areas as varied as tourism, transport, renewable energy and the area’s heritage and genealogy. All of this has a role to play in economic regeneration and maintaining the population.
“The event, which was opened by local councillor, Annie MacDonald, proved how much work has already been done by the Lochs community development group and its development officer Helen Sandison. The group, and the seven organisations involved in it are actively seeking public funding for the area and coordinating the considerable task which that involve, and it was encouraging to hear about plans in the community on everything from first responders to playgroups and community forests.
“It is also encouraging that the plans are winning backing from HIE and the Comhairle, and I look forward to the next stage of the process when an action plan of specific projects is put together. People in Lochs are to be congratulated for setting out their own priorities as a community and not allowing others to set plans for them.”
