The island of ‘Struay’ took centre stage at this week’s BAFTA awards, as Katie Morag, which was shot in Lewis, won a coveted accolade for Children’s Programme of the Year.
The second series of this popular kids’ TV programme was filmed in the islands in the summer with scenes shot at the Stornoway studio facilities and on location.
Katie Morag is based on the hugely popular series of books by Mairi Hedderwick which relate the adventures of this feisty red-headed girl who lives with her family on the magical island of Struay.
The stories celebrate the intrinsic sense of community, the preciousness of the environment and the universal tensions and joys of family life.
Actress Cherry Campbell plays Katie Morag and numerous locals have been drafted in (including the Stornoway Gazette) as extras for the shoot.
Katie Morag is also nominated for another three BAFTAs at this weekend’s British Academy Children’s Awards in London.
