Kilda Cruises CAUGHT an Atlantic Bluefin tuna today! (Thursday, September 26th).
In this week’s Stornoway Gazette (out today) readers will find out about the first Atlantic Bluefin tuna fish caught on camera in Hebridean waters by local company Kilda Cruises.
But today they went one step further and hooked a monster - the fish is approximately nine foot long and around 300lbs.
Atlantic Bluefin tuna tend not to enter Scottish waters, but have been sighted more and more in recent years.
Their torpedo shaped streamlined bodies can travel up to 43 miles per hour and the species – a rare trait among fish – are warm-blooded, meaning they are able to adjust their body temperature, keeping it higher than the surrounding waters, meaning they can adapt to cooler oceans.
We hope to have some photographs of the Atlantic Bluefin tuna soon, so keep tuned.
