Leaked Coastguard paper causes confusion

Leaks from a briefing paper to Government Ministers have further fuelled uncertainty as to the fate of the Stornoway Coastguard station.

Conflicting reports appear to suggest that the Goat Island facility was either pencilled in as a sub centre and that Shetland was not initially included in the consultation paper currently up for debate.

The unpublished draft report called “Protecting Our Seas And Shores In The 21st Century”, delivered to ministers on December 10 is said to have included a draft shortlist for the national network of coastguard “sub-stations” was Belfast, Falmouth, Humber, Stornoway and Swansea.

However, other sources insisted that Shetland was a late addition to the consultation, suggesting that it was Stornoway that was up for closure.
