Christmas has come early for two Christines in the Isle of Lewis this week, after they became winners with People’s Postcode Lottery.

Christine Slaven and Christine Matheson were delighted to hear that their postcode HS2 9PX had won them each £10,000.

Christine Slaven was surprised while working at her job as a revenues officer for the local council by People’s Postcode Lottery Ambassador Judie McCourt, who presented her with her cheque.

“I was absolutely floored when they all showed up,” said Christine. “When Judie pulled the cheque out of the envelope and I saw all those zeros, I couldn’t believe it.”

Christine, who has been playing since 2008, had to step out of her office to meet the team from People’s Postcode Lottery.

“It must have been very entertaining for passers-by when I received my cheque,” said Christine. “I had to go into work again shaking like a leaf.”

Christine is looking forward to celebrating with her two daughters, Karen and Kristy and grandchildren 13 year old Lewis and 11 year old Robbie.

“It still feels surreal,” said Christine. “We’ll have an even better Christmas this year.”

Another Christine is also celebrating. Christine Matheson was enjoying a day off when she was surprised with her cheque.

“I wasn’t expecting the team to show up so I still had wet hair from the shower,” said Christine. “It was a wonderful surprise.”

Christine, who works at a playgroup, was encouraged to play by her brother and already has big plans for her winnings.

“I would have been thrilled with £1000 so I’m over the moon with £10,000,” said Christine. “The money will definitely help towards Christmas and I would love to get new carpets for the house. My brother Roddy recently built my daughter a stable for her horses so I’d like to give him something towards it too. After all, it was him who convinced me to sign up in the first place.”

Christine is also looking forward to celebrating with her four children, 15 year old Leah, nine year old Alannah, 6 year old Carys and 4 year old Calvin.

One of the reasons the two Christines signed up was to support local charities. One project is Oxfam Scotland’s Climate Change project in the Western Isles. The project aims to fight back against climate change by training volunteers to build dune barriers from old fishing nets and lime grass to stop the creeping sea.

There was a third winner who won £20,000 but was not home when the team called. The cheque will be posted to the winner.

People’s Postcode Ambassador Judie McCourt said: “I have really enjoyed visiting the Isle of Lewis and presenting both Christines with their cheques. They both have very different plans for the money and I wish them all the best. I’m sure they’ll both have a very special Christmas.”

It’s not just winner who benefit. To date, players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised £33.2 million for charities and good causes across Britain.
