A man has died after falling overboard from a fishing vessel south of Barra, October 4.

The Coastguard rushed Gerard Gillies, 42, to hospital after he fell overboard from a fishing vessel south of Barra. They had received a Mayday broadcast at 12.25pm from a fishing vessel reporting they had recovered someone from the water who had fallen overboard south of Barra Island.

The Coastguard requested the launch of Barra RNLI lifeboat and the Coastguard rescue helicopter from Stornoway.

Mr Gillies, understood to have been from Barra, was recovered from the water by another man on board the vessel. He was transferred to Barra lifeboat and then taken to the Western Isles Hospital by the Coastguard rescue helicopter.

Police Scotland have confirmed that Mr Gillies sadly died and that his next of kin have been informed.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
