Action must be taken to ensure the safety of the waters around the Western Isles, says local MP Angus MacNeil.
Mr MacNeil and the other MPs in the north are urging the UK Transport Minister to tackle the Highlands & Islands maritime safety deficit ahead of the forthcoming Government Spending Review.
Concerns continue to mount about the removal of the second Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) in Stornoway with Mr MacNeil seeking commitment at a meeting with Robert Goodwill MP that action would be taken to ensure the safety of the waters in the region.
The issue has become increasingly prevalent as the only current ETV, based in Kirkwall, and services both the Minch and the Northern Islands, is only funded until March 2016. The UK Government has yet to make a commitment to retain this vessel beyond that point.
