Twelve island men posed naked, with their modesty obscured and protected by strategically placed gym equipment, to raise money for The Monday Club - a Stornoway-based charity which brings together people affected by strokes and heart conditions.

The naked calendars will be available to purchase either online on the calendar’s Facebook page or at a number of local businesses in town from late next week.

Based at The Retirement Centre in Stornoway the Monday Club group meet twice a month.

Group leader Alison Tunstall says she has been thrilled by the bravery of the dazzling dozen who ditched their kit for the calendar to raise money for a club which is very dear to her.

She said: “I took over the running of the group almost four years ago and it really is a privilege for me to be involved.

“Presently we have 24 members varying in age from early 50’s to 93. The group are all vibrant and fun loving people, there is always a lot of laughter and chatter and we make a lot of noise.

“When at The Retirement Centre we often have our in- house band playing.”

She continued: “I could not have done this without 12 men who gave up their time and modesty, some at the eleventh hour, to help raise money for the group. Also the friends that helped rally round to pull this together, Diane at DGK Signs for her time and to Paul from McGinley Hebridean Photography for spending so much time making sure we got great photos.

“It soon became apparent when I moved to the island 4 and a half years ago that the generosity and kindness of those who live here knows no bounds.”

The Monday Club are an entirely self funding group so the calendar is a clever way for the charity to bring in some much needed funds. Last year they hosted a bingo night while in 2014 Alison and another volunteer completed the Harris half marathon.

Alison added: “This year I wanted to promote fitness and healthy living as a stroke prevention so what better way than with a ‘naked’ men calendar with the models posing with gym equipment.

“Something to make you smile for a year as you turn the monthly pages quite possibly see someone you know smiling back, and also a reminder of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.”
