A final vote on legislation to allow Gay Marriage will take place at the Scottish Parliament this afternoon (Tuesday).

Western Isles MSP Alasdair Allan will retain his stance of voting against the legislation.

Ahead of today’s debate and vote, Dr Allan said: “I think society has treated gay people very unfairly in the past and it is right that same sex couples have a right to civil partnerships. However the specific issue of marriage raises different and difficult issues for many people, not least in the Western Isles, where many hundreds of people have been in touch with me about this.”

He added: “I think I have some duty to try to ensure those concerns are recorded by voting against the bill. There is however little doubt that the bill will be passed this evening. I believe that despite the heated debate around this bill, we should and do all have a commitment to promote a Scotland that respects everyone, whatever their religion or their sexuality.”
