Western Isles MSP, Alasdair Allan has welcomed a commitment from the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, in her Programme for Government yesterday to tackle the issue of delayed discharges in Scotland’s hospitals.
Dr Allan recently raised this issue with both Western Isles Council and NHS Western Isles following concerns raised with him regarding this problem as it affects the Western Isles.
Alasdair Allan commented: “We should not have a situation where people who have no reason to be in hospital are kept there. However much care is provided in hospital no one would choose to live in a hospital ward for a long period without very good reason.
“In the Western Isles the Royal College of Nursing and others have made this point to me. Yesterday when announcing her first Programme for Government to the Parliament the First Minister announced £5 million of Scottish Government money to address this issue.
“This money will be matched by funding from Scotland’s councils and NHS to bring the figure to £15 million.
“There is wide agreement that we need to invest in home care packages and residential care and that keeping people unnecessarily in hospital is not a reasonable solution for the future. I hope that this funding will help to address this.”
