MSP welcomes Remain vote in the Islands

Western Isles MSP, Alasdair Allan, has this morning warmly welcomed the vote in the Western Isles for the country to remain in the European Union.

The islands MSP, who is Scotland’s Europe Minister, campaigned for a “remain” vote.

Alasdair Allan commented: “This was a very welcome endorsement by the islands in favour of staying in Europe, and contrasts with the islands’ vote against European membership during the last referendum on this subject in 1975.

“There are strong remain results coming in from around Scotland but, as of now, the UK position is far from clear.

“There was a respectful debate in the islands, despite the at times unpleasant tone of the debate across the UK media.

“There are many things that need fixed in Europe, but the islands have concluded that Scotland’s future lies firmly in the EU.”
