Murder trial to take place in February

TWO men are to stand trial charged with the murder of a teenage boy on the Isle of Lewis.

Johnathan MacKinnon (22) of Lossiemouth Road, Elgin and Stefan Millar (21) of Dunabban Road, Inverness were today (Monday) in the dock for a preliminary hearing at the High Court in Glasgow.

The pair are accused of killing 16 year-old Liam Aitchison at a property in the Steinish area of Lewis on November 23 last year.

Judge Lord Bracadale today set a trial date for February next year. The case is expected to last around three weeks.

A further preliminary hearing will take place before then in January.

It was reported at the time of the death that Liam – originally from South Uist – had been spending time at his father’s home island of Lewis since leaving school that summer.

His dad Norman later paid an emotional tribute to his son calling him “a crazy diamond”.

More than 200 mourners packed Our Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church in Stornoway last December for a memorial service.
