New drop-in clinic for Dietetics launches

To help improve the nutritional health and wellbeing of people in the Western Isles, a new Dietetic Drop-in Clinic is set to be launched next week.

The clinic, which launches on Thursday January 10, 2013, will take place every Thursday from 12noon-1pm in the Renal Unit of Western Isles Hospital. No appointment is needed, and there is no need for a referral from a doctor.

NHS Western Isles Nutrition and Dietetic Manager Karen France explained: “The direct access clinic allows you to refer yourself to a dietitian without having to go via your GP first. What we will be providing is an initial discussion about any concerns or issues; it is not a full assessment or treatment and will not include a weigh-in session. Some advice or a food diary may be given at the drop-in clinic if appropriate. Following your appointment, you may require a further appointment with a dietitian, and we can arrange this for you at the drop-in clinic.”

The launch of the Dietetic Drop-in Clinic follows the successful introduction of the Physiotherapy Drop-in Clinic back in 2008. Since the launch of that clinic, feedback from patients has been extremely positive and it is anticipated that the Dietetic Drop-in Clinic will be equally as popular.

Only a limited number of slots will be available at the Drop-in Clinic every week, and clients will be seen on a first come, first served basis. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
