A new Nissan Leaf Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) has been purchased by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar for use from its offices on Sandwick Road, Stornoway.
The new acquisition takes to 2 the number of ZEVs in the Comhairle’s fleet, with the other vehicle based in Balivanich.
The Balivanich ZEV has been in use for over a year, during which time it has covered some 7,000 miles, mainly in the Benbecula area, where it is in daily use by the Council Officer. The ZEV replaced a petrol-powered people carrier leading to a clear saving on fuel, zero road tax, and, with the newer vehicle, less expenditure on maintenance. At present the only charging point for the vehicle in the Southern Isles is in Balivanich but the charging point network is being extended to include a point at the Comhairle offices in Castlebay which will make it possible to plan work on Barra using the ZEV.
Following an invitation of expressions of interest from other Community Planning Partners, an arrangement has been set up with NHS Western Isles to provide staff transport locally between Balivanich Airport and the Uist and Barra Hospital.
The Stornoway ZEV is available for use by all departments of the Comhairle and it’s CPP partners. A charging unit with two separate charging points has been installed outside the Comhairle offices on Sandwick Road.
Angus Campbell, Leader of Comhairle nan Eilean siar, commented: “The purchase of this second ZEV by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is a further demonstration of our commitment towards the environment and looking at ways in which green energy can be used in an innovative and cost-effective manner. We have already seen in Balivanich that the ZEV can be used effectively in the day-to-day business of the Comhairle and our Community partners, and I am sure that the Stornoway ZEV will prove to be an equally useful addition to our fleet.”
