The Free Church of Scotland has announced its Moderator Designate for the 2013 General Assembly.

Recently a Commission of Assembly met in Edinburgh and unanimously agreed the nomination of Rev. Angus J. Howat.

Born in Monifieth, Mr Howat was brought up in Edinburgh and went to Daniel Stewart’s College.

After graduating MA from the University of Edinburgh in 1965, he went on to attain a post-graduate degree in Librarianship the following year at the University of Strathclyde.

Mr Howat worked in the public library service in Ayr, where he met his wife Irene, and then in Elgin, for 19 years.

While in Elgin he became a member of Elgin and Forres Free Church, and continues to be thankful for the ministry and influence of Rev. A.P.W. Fraser.

Sensing the call to ministry, Mr Howat began his studies at the Free Church College in Edinburgh in 1985, and was licensed by the Presbytery of Edinburgh and Perth in 1988.

After a spell as temporary assistant in the Free Church College library, he was ordained and inducted to Campbeltown Free Church in June 1990.

In August 1996, Campbeltown was linked with Tarbert and Islay under Mr Howat’s ministry. This added responsibility included monthly visits to Islay until the church on the island closed in December 2000.

Mr Howat retired in the summer of 2009, and now lives in Coylton, South Ayrshire. He is an elder at Ayr and Kilwinning Free Church.

He has also served in various capacities on the boards and committees of the Free Church, most notably as clerk of the Sustentation Committee; and clerk of the Home Missions Board – a role from which he stepped down from at the last General Assembly. He has also been assistant clerk of Assembly since 1998.

Mr Howat has been married for over 40 years to Irene, editor of ‘The Instructor’, the Free Church’s children’s magazine, and author of several books for children and adults. They have three daughters and two grandchildren.

In his spare time, Mr Howat enjoys reading, walking, researching family history, exercising his pet Labrador and grandfatherly activities.

The Moderator chairs the Free Church General Assembly each May, and is responsible for leading worship at the beginning of every, as well as ruling on points of order.
