The latest phase of a new build development programme to creating housing on the Islands has been completed by Calmax Construction Ltd.
The four house scheme at Habost, Ness, Isle of Lewis was delivered through a partnership between HHP, the Comhairle and the Scottish Government.
HHP Board Member and Member of the Development Working Group Alasdair Mackenzie said: “I am delighted to see the completion of these houses.
“This demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing high quality housing right across the islands and supporting our most vulnerable communities.
“We are also very aware of the problems many face with fuel poverty and these houses are designed to be easy to keep warm.”
Local Councillor John Mackay added: “I commend HHP and their contractor Calmax on this excellent development which has provided much needed housing opportunities in my area and delivered wider benefits for the community.”
As part of HHP’s Community Benefit requirements Calmax donated £600 to the local Historical Society Commun Eachdraidh Nis (pictured below).
Joan Mackay from the Commun said: “We are very grateful to HHP for making this happen and to Calmax for their generous donation.
“This means a lot to us and provides a great boost to us at a time when resources are difficult to obtain.”
Kevin Stewart, Minister for Local Government and Housing said: “These four new homes are a great example of partnership working between the Scottish Government, Hebridean Housing Partnership and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
“This will not only deliver warm, energy efficient, affordable homes but also help local people remain in their community helping sustain it.
“This Government is investing over £3 billion over the next 5 years to deliver 50,000 homes as everyone should live in a good quality, affordable and sustainable home and have the opportunity to be part of a thriving community.”
The four properties are named ‘Slighe Na Caimbeil’ in memory of local residents who were killed during the first World War.
The name was chosen by Councillor Mackay in consultation with the local community.
The houses are insulated to very high standards and have air source heat pumps which provide extremely efficient and economical heating in off gas areas.
