New Vice Lord-Lieutenant appointed

The Lord-Lieutenant of the Western Isles, Alexander Matheson has announced the appointment of Donald Martin as Vice Lord-Lieutenant to succeed John Murdo Morrison of Tarbert, who retired at the end of last year after 18 years service.

Mr Martin, was appointed Clerk to the Lieutenancy in 1997 and has been a Deputy Lieutenant since 2003. Following a career in the public service with Comhairle nan Eilean and latterly with Comunn na Gàidhlig until his retirement in 2007, he is currently Chairman of the Harris Tweed Authority, Chairman of Acair, the bilingual publishing company, a Board Member of MG Alba and Lews Castle College.

Announcing the appointment, the Lord-Lieutenant paid tribute to the contribution given by John Murdo Morrison over the years. Mr Matheson added: “I was very fortunate in having John Murdo as my Vice Lord-Lieutenant since 2001 and relied very much on his wide experience and knowledge in all aspects of community service in the Western Isles. I welcome Donald’s appointment as his successor and look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role”.

Donald Martin added: “ It is a great privilege and honour for me to be appointed as Vice Lord-Lieutenant and I look forward to supporting the Lord-Lieutenant in carrying out the work of the Lieutenancy.”
