Weekly round up of news from Secondary School the Nicolson Institute, Stornoway.

On Thursday 10th March S3 Nuadh-Eòlas and Eachdraidh pupils at The Nicolson Institute participated in the BBC Schools Report 2016.

The annual project involves thousands of secondary school pupils across the UK writing their own news stories and posting them on their school websites.

Pupils from The Nicolson Institute prepared news items and interviews in Gaelic and covered a range of topics including a feature on the Flannan Isles and an interview with Angus MacNeil MP.

Pupils were involved in presenting and producing Feasgar on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal and in the evening some of the pupils were on BBC An La.

You can read and listen to the news they produced on our school website.

Many thanks to those who helped the school with this project.

Many thanks to Claudine Bloom and Andy Twort of Balallan for their presentation about the Peking to Paris Rally. They spoke to S2 Elective classes earlier this month.

Andy and Claudine intend to drive the 13,695km route through 11 countries in 36 days.

This involves camping in the Gobi Desert and crossing some incredibly challenging terrain, using their four ‘rest days’ to repair and maintain the car.

The 50-year old Volvo Amazon, christened Amy, has been extensively customised in preparation for the epic adventure.

After hearing an account of the extensive preparations necessary for the rally, pupils watched a stunning video of the route and were then able to view Amy the Amazon.

Andy and Claudine have decided to donate money raised as a result of their trip to local charity The Leanne Fund and to a hospice for children in Devon.

Leanne’s mum and dad were in school to hear the presentation and Mrs Mitchell gave a very moving account of what it was like to live with a debilitating illness like cystic fibrosis.

If you are interested in finding out more about the rally, you can contact Claudine and Andy by e-mail on: or follow their progress on– Amy Amazon.

Thanks also to Norman Smith for making the initial contact with the school and suggesting the visit.

Air oidhche Chiadain chum sinn coinneamh airson pàrantan le clann ann am P7 ann am Foghlam tro Mheadhan na Gàidhlig.

Thug seo cothrom dhaibh ionnsachadh mu fhoghlam Gàidhlig anns an Àrd-sgoil.

We recently held an evening for parents of P7 pupils who are currently in Gaelic Medium Education.

This gave them an opportunity to learn about secondary GME provision.

Congratulations to Gwion ap Rheinallt (S6) who came runner-up in the Inverness Music Festival’s Finale Concert.

This concert was a competition between all those musicians who won their individual competitions and achieved at least a distinction.

Gwion plays the Alto Saxophone.
