The incident happened around 3.25pm on Monday, December 14, on the B895 Newmarket to Tolsta road at Broadbay View, Back.

It involved a nine-year-old girl and a blue Toyota Yaris car.

Because of the site of the incident and the road closure, it meant no local diversions could be put in place and many drivers were forced to abandon their cars and walk to their destinations, picking them up in the morning.

All three emergency services attended and the girl received treatment before initially being taken by ambulance to the Western Isles Hospital before, the Gazette believes, being transferred later by air ambulance to the Yorkhill Children’s Hospital in Glasgow for further treatment at the specialist centre.

Hospital staff have said her condition is currently described as serious but that she is stable meantime.

The road was immediately closed until almost midnight whilst specialist officers carried out a forensic investigation at the scene.

Sergeant David Miller, of Police Scotland’s Highlands and Islands Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing and I am appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time in question and has not yet spoken to us to come forward.

“I’m particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage which could help with our enquiries.”

Those with information can contact the Road Policing Unit in Dingwall on 101, quoting reference number 1877 of 14 December.
