The Olympic Flame will shine a light right across the Western Isles celebrating the culture and heritage of the area and showcasing the very best of the Islands. We have no doubt that the welcome Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and the people of the Islands will provide will demonstrate how the spirit of the Olympic Games is reaching out across the UK “
Leader of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Angus Campbell said: “I am delighted that the Western Isles will be involved in this unique event and that our bid to be a relay location has been successful. It will be a great opportunity to highlight the Western Isles to a national and international audience whilst providing the chance of a lifetime for people in the Western Isles to get involved with a major sporting occasion.
The Comhairle has invested heavily in sport across the Islands and we want this event to be a major sports celebration for people to join in and make the most of what will be a wonderful occasion.
“There will also be an economic spin-off for the islands with an additional 70 visitors or so associated with the Relay arriving in the Islands. In addition the media coverage is likely to generate interest in the Islands and prompt many people to visit.”
