Complaints by local residents have triggered a rethink by the Comhairle of the site being used for the Stornoway fun fair.
During the carnival week in August the fun fair was pitched at the Fisherman’s Car Park in the town, but the level and duration of noise from the fair lead to complaints by neighbours, and future use of the site could now be ruled out.
A report on the siting of the fun fair will be presented to the Comhairle this week, and the Fisherman’s Car Park looks set to be removed from the list of potential future sites.
The fun fair is usually in Stornoway twice a year to coincide with the carnival and the switching on of the Christmas lights, and organisers of these events, Stornoway Amenity Trust state that the fair makes a contribution to the costs of the events.
Rules for the letting of land within Stornoway Town Centre will now be revised, and the decision on the use of sites for big events will remain delegated to the Comhairle’s Director of Technical Services working in consultation with Stornoway’s local councillors.
The proposals will also mean that all applications for the use of sites such as Comhairle-controlled car parks will have to be submitted eight weeks in advance of the event.
