These are issues close to his heart, having seen the tragic effects of mental illness first hand. He is also a member of the MS Society committee back in his hometown.

Richard arrived in the Western Isles at the weekend for the next leg of his challenge and his marathon journey will see him trekking around the Islands’ coastline, he estimates this will take him around a fortnight.

Talking about his preparation for the challenge he said: “I’d only walked as far as a normal dog walk before this!”

He added that he got in shape for the trek by working out at the gym and walking his dogs while carrying his camping gear.

This will be Richard’s first trip to the Western Isles and a highlight so far has been the Callanish Stones, he said: “People have been really friendly and helpful, it has really surprised me and exceeded my expectations. It’s a beautiful place and I’m really grateful to be here.

“I am religious as well and knowing the importance of the Church in the islands I have been overwhelmed by the feelings I have experienced over the last few days.”

As far the next stage of his trip he concluded: “I’m learning that the world isn’t as scary as you think it is; it’s as scary as you make it.

“I’ve never been as passionate about anything as I am about this challenge.”
