Outer Hebrides house condition survey

A survey of approximately 1,215 properties in the Western Isles is being carried out for Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

The purpose of a House Condition Survey (HCS) is to provide information on the condition of the private sector housing.

The information gathered can be used to inform the development of the Local Housing Strategy and the Housing Need and Demand Assessment. The information can also be useful in the development of other corporate strategies, such as the Single Outcome Agreement.

The last Private Sector House Condition Survey was carried out in 2005, but now that data is no longer valid.

Using sampling, the Survey will examine the physical aspects of housing stock to provide information on areas such as defects, component lifecycle, heating, energy efficiency and tolerable standard.

In addition to an appraisal of physical housing conditions, the Survey will include householder socio-economic interviews .

Homes have been chosen, at random, for inclusion in the survey but it is carried out on a voluntary basis. All surveyors will carry a photo card and ID pass from David Adamson & Partners Ltd.

The surveys will take place:

Lewis and Harris from 7 March to 8 April;

North Uist and Benbecula 11 April to 6 May;

South Uist and Barra 9 May to 3 June.
