Islander Morag is awarded an MBE

The wee unassuming pensioner goes about her business day in, day out with no fuss or fanfare, nor does she expect any either.

Morag Rothach (Munro), 71, from Borve in Harris has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Honours List for services to Crossroads Care.

And, when the Gazette caught up with Morag, we found out a lot more about the work she does.

Having changed from a teaching career in 1978, Morag decided that the time was right to change direction and do something else - with Harris Voluntary Service (HVS).

She’s been a local councillor as well as the organiser of HVS, retiring in 2012 after 32 years, while simultaneously taking on the role of voluntary coordinator for Crossroads Care, which started in 1985.

Morag volunteered in that role for 34 years, a remarkable achievement.

And despite giving of her time so freely to others, she still manages to play the role of granny to six grandchildren whom she adores.

Morag told the Gazette: “When I got the original email I actually thought it was a scam, someone at it, but I thought I had better not be too hasty so emailed them back.

“To say I was shocked is an understatement, I simply couldn’t believe it.

“There are many others much more deserving of this than I am. I couldn’t have done the work I did without both my the help of the Lord, and a large number of very good friends.

“I’ve had a huge deal of support over the years, and been very fortunate, and I now feel I’m accepting this award for all volunteers I’ve worked with.”
