The short ceremony marked the date of Japan’s surrender – August 15, 1945 – and the subsequent ending of the Second World War.

A two-minute silence was observed and wreaths were laid by Western Isles Lord Lieutenant Donald Martin, comhairle convenor Norman Macdonald, on behalf of the community, and Elizabeth Jappy, on behalf of the Burma Star Association.

Standard bearers attended the ceremony, where army cadet Karen Logue sounded the Last Post on the bugle and Aaron Ingram played the bagpipes.

Prior to the ceremony, there was a presentation of a special medallion by the Lord Lieutenant to World War Two veteran Kenny Nicolson, who worked at the code breaking Station X of Bletchley Park that helped enable the British to read the Germans’ Enigma code.
