Work on the new Gress bridge came to a halt when workmen uncovered an ancient historic tunnel, it was dated between 700BC and 400AD. A similar set of tunnels were discovered at Gress Lodge during the late 1940s, but were never properly excavated. These were said to be much larger than the Gress bridge after some initial excavation by the two boys who discovered them. (from Gazette October 1983)
